All State &
Audition Preparation

All State Preparation

Getting ready for All State is a big undertaking. With specific requirements, high expectations, and strong competition, the process can feel overwhelming without the right guidance. As the late clarinetist Kalmen Opperman said: “Practice and hope, but never hope more than you practice.”

At The Music Studio Atlanta, our coaches help students practice effectively, prepare mentally, and approach their audition with confidence. We’ll guide you through each part of the process so you know exactly what’s expected and how to stand out.

What’s included in All State prep?

  • Scales – mastering required scales fluently and accurately.
  • Prepared pieces – vocalists prepare one required song; instrumentalists work on both a technical piece and an etude.
  • Sight-reading and sight-singing – building fluency and strategies for success in this critical section.
  • Musical nuances – dynamics, tone quality, intonation, articulation, and expression that separate good auditions from great ones.
  • Long-term planning – we recommend starting early (ideally at the beginning of the school year or earlier) to allow months of focused preparation.

Our instructors stay up-to-date on the current All State requirements every year, so families can be confident that we know exactly what is needed for a successful audition.

Audition Preparation

Auditions aren’t just for All State—students also prepare for musicals, plays, scholarships, and performing arts schools. Whether you’re auditioning for the school play, a competitive program, or even Broadway, the right coaching can make all the difference.

Some of the areas we coach students in:

  • Monologue training
  • Voice projection and articulation
  • Cutting songs into 16- or 30-bar audition pieces
  • Providing custom backing tracks
  • Guidance on creating a professional resume and headshot package for musical theater auditions
  • How to correctly print, organize, and mark your audition music

Audition prep is an excellent complement to ongoing voice lessons or instrumental lessons and can be scheduled as often as needed leading up to your audition.

Over the years, many of our students have auditioned for or been awarded:
